These dots may look simple but are actually carefully crafted, with a meticulously controlled artistic expression. From the proportion and sequence of the dots, direction of the patterns, density of the mesh, changes in thickness of paint, to the texture of the canvas, all contain Kusama’s characteristic artistic language. Kusama is an expert in “transforming” simple elements through “repetition,” a method that might seems contradictory, but is in reality like the experience of enjoying her paintings. Viewers are able to feel the anxiousness in her life, but also her joy in the creative process.
