The Complexities of Function and Equipment When Designing Tall Buildings

Architect Mon-Chun Lu of TCT Architectural Resources was invited by the POSAMO design team and Department of Architecture of Feng Chia University to speak about the design of tall buildings on May 16, 2016, using Yuanlin Christian Hospital in Changhua County, the first green hospital in Asia, as an example. This occasion was arranged to introduce the design work of tall buildings to architecture students. |

From the architectural base, entrance and exit analysis, to the design arrangement of stories, the focus of designing tall buildings are introduced step-by-step by the architect. Tall buildings are characterized by being different from regular buildings, and usually use steel and reinforced concrete as material, with framework structures to guarantee the overall strength of the composition. Therefore, modular and the locations of structural columns are crucial.
從建築物的基地、出入口分析到樓層的規劃設計，建築師陸續帶出高層建築的設計操作重點。高層建築具有迥異於普通建築的特點，通常以鋼材和鋼筋混凝土為建材，一般採用框架結構等結構形式，以保證建築的整體結構強度，基本模矩與結構柱位的落點是首要課題。

Due to the multiple stores and large amounts of vertical mobility within the building, the chosen location for installing the vertical core becomes crucial. The direction of mobility should be included into consideration in order to release space for floor planning in all stories. As for designs regarding operations, electromechanical systems, water supply and drainage systems, as well as air conditioning system equipment, are all big decisions. For instance, the air conditioning room is linked to the type of air conditioning machine. The air conditioning room should also be placed close to the outer wall to ensure good circulation.
由於高層建築的層數多，垂直交通量大，這時垂直核設置位置顯得重要，必須考量到使用者動線，才能讓出空間作用各層樓的平面區劃。設計操作上，機電、給排水系統與空調系統設備等也是大學問，舉例而言，空調室牽涉到空調機型種類，且必須安排於接近外牆空間，得以有氣流流通。

Each country has different regulations regarding the number of stories that define a building as a“tall building”. However, regardless of the style of design, the thoughtfulness of the design will surely be felt as long as the architect views and experiences the project from the user’s point of view.
高層建築物具體達到何種程度算作高層，不同國家有不同的規定，其實不論哪種建築設計，若能設身處地細心著想，都能讓使用者感受到建築師的貼心設計。
