MADE IN TAIWAN: A Retrospective by Yang Mao Lin
MADE IN TAIWAN: A Retrospective of Yang Mao Lin presents work produced by the artist over more than thirty years, from 1984 to 2015. The show includes drawing, painting, mixed media, and sculpture presented in the five themes: Avant-Garde Reaction, National Epic, Bad Taste, The Immortals, and Wonderland.
楊茂林堪稱台灣當代藝術最具代表性的藝術家之一,MADE IN TAIWAN︰楊茂林回顧展是審視藝術家楊茂林從1984年至2015年的創作整體,作品包括繪畫、綜合媒材、雕塑等創作媒材,並分五大主題︰前衛反動、國族史詩、惡品味、仙班出列、異想幻境。

楊茂林回顧展-前衛反動-肢體記號篇  
Continuing the comic syntax in“Avant–garde and Rebellious – The Semiotics of Limbs, ” the artist uses bold and black lines to make the pictures more powerful. They mainly depict the street campaigns after the abolition of the Martial Law. With duple picture combination, he demonstrates different painting techniques on two different sides intentionally. With woodcuts with left wing features, he uses hand gestures to enhance body language.
「前衛反動-肢體記號篇」 延續漫畫的造形語彙,粗黑線條讓畫面更為粗獷有力,畫的是解嚴之前的街頭運動。雙拼式的畫面組合,刻意在兩邊展現不同的繪畫技法,以左翼性格的木刻版畫結合手勢來強化身體語感。
     
楊茂林回顧展-仙班出列系列
 
In the cartoon figures "Fairies Team" series, Yang Mao Lin integrates the fairies with the tradition, religion, handicraft, cartoon, and comics to constitute conflicting but harmonious effects. The altar is made with the traditional mortise and tenon techniques. The figures from cartoons, computer games, and more are engraved with various craft techniques, such as carving, etching, and hammering instead of the traditional embellishment method. In addition, traditional method of gold plating used in wood carving craft is also employed to highlight the holy atmosphere. As the gold plates are attached to particular areas only, they create a spatial feel.
楊茂林將卡漫人物列於仙班,「仙班出列系列」融合傳統、宗教、工藝、卡漫既衝突又協調的實驗。神壇供桌除了依據古法純粹榫接外,紋飾則是以各種工法鐫鏤、雕鑿出卡通、電玩人物造型的剪影,取代傳統麗的藻飾圖案。此外也採用傳統木雕工藝中貼金箔的手法,金箔烘托出神聖氣氛,也因為只貼局部產生空間感。
 
楊茂林回顧展-異想幻境-曼荼 羅系列
 
Examining his personality, Yang Mao Lin analyzes that he is more like deep-sea fish, gold fish, and tropical fish. Therefore, he uses the figures of various kinds of fishes to create "The Realm of Fantasy – The Mandala Series." In the bodies of the fish he has installed illuminating devices and placed them against different scenes as different characters. Regarding the techniques, Yang Mao Lin also experiments various kinds of alkaline and acidic solvents on copper to oxide it. Gradually, he has "cultivated" many different tones and qualities.
楊茂林探討自身內在性格,他分析自己個性像深海魚、金魚及熱帶魚,因此以各式魚種造形,創作尋找「異想幻境-曼荼羅系列」。他在各式魚體中裝設發光裝置,並崁入不同角色與場景。技法上,楊茂林也在銅上實驗各種酸鹼溶劑,讓銅金屬氧化,慢慢地「養」出多種色澤和質感。

In the "Epic of Nation" series, he uses oils and acrylic to interpret the colonial conditions of Taiwan in different eras. Behind the portraits of the historic figures from the east and west, cannons and warships tell subtle stories. The “Bad Taste” series is computer graphics printed on canvas.
「國族史詩系列」以油彩、壓克力演繹台灣在不同時代被列強殖民的狀態,中外歷史英雄人物肖像的背後是大砲與征戰船艦;以及電腦製作在畫布的「惡品味系列」。
