Entering the dreams and reality of Kusama Yayoi – part one
Dubbed “the greatest artist of Japan” and “queen of polka dots,” the artistic inspirations of Kusama Yayoi come from the world that she sees. Kusama has experienced a nervous hearing and visual disorder since childhood, the illusions that come with this sickness enable her to see the world and even her own body as covered with polka dots. Therefore, these repetitive and derivative patterns have become an important theme throughout her creations; these polka dots are her artistic language.

The works of Kusama Yayoi are filled with originality and appeal, and are expressed in painting, soft sculpture, performance art, installation art, and creative writing. The unstoppable action of creating art has become her redemption. “I followed the thread of art and somehow discovered a path that would allow me to live. If it were not for art, I would have killed myself a long time ago.” – Kusama Yayoi

Dots Obsession,2015
Large red balloons with white dots are brightly colored, impossible to be ignored. They come in different sizes, whether floating midair or scattered on the floor, a countless amount of dots before the eyes. Peek into the microscope within the balloons, and see the white dots reflected and extended into the entire space, instantly surrounding you with an infinite quantity of dots and experiencing the anxiety of being swallowed by the proliferating dots.

I'm Here, but Nothing,2015
Large numbers of vinyl stickers are equally distributed on furniture and living appliances, turning into small dots that shine in the dark room when exposed to fluorescent light, creating a view filled with colorful dots, like a valley filled with fireflies.

Ladder to Heaven,2012
With no beginning nor ending, this is the collision of life and death. Fiber ropes and flexible light strips are intertwined into ladder shapes, and mirrors are placed on top and below the ladder, taking advantage of the refections of mirrors. Lift up the head and see the ladder stretch into the heavens, far away and unreachable; lower the head and see the ladder zooming into a dark bottomless hole, creating anxiety and fear.

Repetitive-Vision,Phallus-Boat,2000
Various synthetic fabrics filled with rubber sponge are made into phalli that are stacked into the shape of a boat with oars, placed in a space surrounded by wallpaper covered in pictures of little boats taken from above, presenting a repetitive visual by countless photographs. This work expresses the self-ablation of the artist, enabling introspection through the repeated presentation of the two elements; polka dots and phalli.
