An artist with a kid at heart hides in the never-never land-part two

Growing up in the pretty unsophisticated town, Mr. Yang rolled in the paddy fields, dug clams in the streams, and caught all kinds of insects since his childhood. These nostalgic memories in his mind turn into a series of insect sculptures. Mr. Yang experienced the martial law era and baby boomers. He also took part in democratic movement in his youth. With rebellious thoughts in mind, he drew a series paintings of streets against and fairy tales hinting the justice. The childhood memories, life and cultures contribute to the unique ideas and creation course to Mr. Yang.
童年在純樸的城鎮成長，從小就在稻田內翻滾，溪水摸蛤，抓各式各樣的昆蟲，這些記憶的鄉愁，進而有了系列昆蟲的雕塑品。楊茂林老師的人生經過戒嚴時代、嬰兒潮時期，年輕時期也參加過民主運動，在叛逆思路之下繪畫了一系列的街頭鬥爭與隱喻正義的神話故事。成長的情感記憶、生活文化及時代巨輪，都造就了他的特殊意念跟爾後的創作歷程。

Mr. Yang said that his character was not suitable for the office. As a child who did not like to study, he went to work instead. He did lathing, welding, panel-beating and other chores. He carried his bicycle with heavy iron bars every day; as a result, he stumbled over them and bruised his body very often. However, the implementation experience has become one of his sculpture techniques in the future. Yearning for freedom, he went on exam for the Department of Advertising Design which has outdoor painting class and this decision made him doom to become an artist. Mr. Yang said, “I find I have nimble fingers. Others have to spend about two weeks in making a sketch, but for me, I am able to make a sketch in two hours. It really makes me feel a sense of accomplishment!” Mr. Yang was once a naughty boy, but he has grown to be an artist winning awards in five countries.
楊老師說他的個性不適合上班，小時不愛念書只好去工作，到工廠做車床、焊接、板金等苦差事，每天牽著腳踏車載著很重的鐵條，常被絆倒，壓傷小小的身軀，但那時候的實作經驗，也成了現在雕塑的技術養份。後來初中回到校園，因緣際會看到廣告設計科，能夠在戶外愜意畫畫，嚮往自由的他跑去考試，註定了藝術家的人生。楊老師說：『發現自己的手蠻巧，別人畫素描要兩個禮拜，但我兩個小時就可畫出一張素描，因此特別有成就感！』從一個大家覺得特別頑皮的孩童，變成一位榮獲五縣市繪畫殊榮，經常得獎學金的優秀學子！

| For Mr. Yang, art is not a job; it is a career, a dream, an ideal. On the way of becoming an artist, things did not go smoothly in the beginning. In order to earn a living and make his art dream come true, he had ever set up a vendor’s stall in the street, delivered newspaper and drawn portraits for families and neighbors to earn extra money. However, because of the long years stress and persistence with art, he had suffered from bipolar disorder and depression. After a long period of suffering, Mr. Yang has learned how to live peacefully with these two illness. He thoughtfully said, “Now I realize that the most difficult thing is to get along with myself. If I can get well along with myself, I also can get well along with my family. Accompanying my family to travel and making my mother feel relieved in the heaven has become a way to miss my mother.” |

| 藝術這條路不是一個職業，對楊茂林老師來說，藝術是一個事業、一個夢想、一個理想。這條路並不是一切順遂，堅持的過程中楊老師還去擺了路邊攤、送報紙，幫家族鄰里畫人像賺外快，只為維持生計辛苦撐著藝術夢！然而因為長年的壓力與對藝術的執念，對於感官特別敏銳的他，有了躁鬱症和憂鬱症雙重的問題困擾。幸虧度過了漫長的痛苦期，到了40、50歲的年紀時學會用各種方式與之平衡，到現在已學會與症狀和平共處。老師若有所思地說：『現在才知道跟自己是最難相處的，跟自己相處好了，自然跟家人相處變得融洽了，現在用陪伴家族旅遊讓天堂的媽媽欣慰，已經變成思念媽媽的一種方式。』 |

Mr. Yang puts all his romance on creations. In 2007, his oil painting “Zealandia Memorandum” was sold in tens of millions of dollars in the auction, and he made his first peak. However, he went on to change his creative way and began his sculpture career. This brought him to his second peak in life. Mr. Yang has been known as one of the “Four Kings” in contemporary Taiwan art, and was third invited to Venice Biennale exhibition. His reputation has earned him a lofty position in the history of Taiwan’s art, but Mr. Yang said, “In my third stage of life, I want to make good use of my advantages and challenge myself. Every day, every work is a brand new start for me; also, rethinking my own life is a part of creations!”Next year from January 30th to April 20th, there will be Mr. Yang’s 40th anniversary exhibition in Taipei Fine Arts Museum. This is a retrospective exhibition of Mr. Yang’s exquisite works from high school to now, and it has been actively planned.
人生三大高峰，熱情是藝術不滅的真情
藝術家的浪漫都運用在創作上了，老師人生第一高峰，2007年油畫作品《熱蘭遮紀事》在拍賣會拍出千萬元高價，登上了千萬油畫家的顛峰高境，但他進而轉換自己的創作方式，以雕塑走向他人生第二高峰。雖然在藝文界已經被稱為台灣當代藝術《四大天王》之一，更三度受邀到威尼斯雙年展出，威名早已寫進台灣美術史的崇高地位，但楊老師說第三階段就是要運用自我的優勢與對自己的挑戰，從了解自己開始，每一天每一個作品都是全新的更新，重新思考自己的人生，也是一種創作！明年1月30日至4月24日，北美館將展出老師40年回顧展，從高中時代到現在的精湛作品總回顧，目前正積極籌劃中，令人相當期待。
